Work Injury and Accident Care for Alton, IL

Alton, IL patients hurt at work or in an accident are seen at our St. Louis clinic beside Lambert Airport. Under Illinois law you, not your employer, choose the treating physician: two choices, and referrals those providers make do not count against you.

Alton is the shortest drive to our clinic of any Illinois town we treat. It is about half an hour over the Clark Bridge. It is also a place where the choice-of-physician rule matters, because that choice is worth making on purpose, not by default.

We are a medical practice, not a law firm. The statutory position here is summarized from the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission; your particular claim belongs with your attorney.

What doctor should you see for workers’ comp in Illinois?

In Illinois the injured worker picks the treating physician. You get two choices, and referrals made by them do not count against you. Missouri reverses this: there the employer selects, and your own pick is at your own expense. The rule in full.

So the first provider you see after you report an injury is a decision, not paperwork. Most people use up that choice without knowing it. They take whoever the employer names. Then they find out later that switching costs them their second and last choice.

What a first visit establishes

Right after an injury is when cause is easiest to record. Later, it is hardest to rebuild. Exam findings, imaging read against those findings, and a written baseline of what you can do are what make a claim readable months later.

Soft tissue is not the same as minor

The most common brush-off after a crash or a lifting injury goes like this: the scan looks normal, so the injury is minor. But soft tissue, ligament and nerve injuries often do not show up on the first scans ordered. They still cause real and lasting pain.

Soft tissue injury explained and the vehicle-damage myth both cover how that argument gets used against people.

How soon should you see a doctor after a work injury?

The window right after an injury is worth more than any later treatment. It is also the one most often wasted. Report the injury to your employer in writing. Get seen. Make sure the record says what happened, not only what hurts. A note reading back pain with no cause is close to useless six months later.

It also matters for your health. The factors that predict chronic pain can be measured within days. The treatments that change that path work best before the nervous system has had months to lock the pattern in.

Can you be injured if your X-ray is normal?

A negative X-ray means no broken bone. It does not mean no injury. The gap between those two is where a large share of Alton claims lose value.

Ligament, disc, muscle and nerve injuries often do not show on the first scan ordered. That is truer still when the scan was picked to rule out an emergency, not to describe an injury. Advanced imaging read against a careful exam is a different job from a radiology report read on its own — see soft tissue injury explained.

Concussion is the other one often missed, because a normal CT is routinely told to the patient as a clean bill of health. A normal CT does not exclude a brain injury covers what does detect it.

What the treatment sequence actually looks like

Interventional care for a crash or lifting injury comes in stages, and you cannot swap their order. First, the source is confirmed. That usually takes an exam plus targeted imaging. Where the picture is unclear, we add a diagnostic block. It numbs one structure and answers the question by whether the pain stops.

Only then do we consider anything longer-lasting. Treating before that point leads to the pattern people show up here with. It is a series of injections that each helped for two weeks, aimed at whatever looked worst on a report.

Say a facet joint (a small joint at the back of the spine) is confirmed as the source. Then radiofrequency ablation of the nerves feeding it lasts in a way a steroid injection does not. In chosen cases it is a genuine alternative to fusion — ablation before fusion covers when that applies. Where the disc is the problem, the non-surgical options are worth using up first, because a fusion cannot be undone. And problems in the levels next to it are common enough to plan around.

None of this is a promise. We confirm the diagnosis first, then treat what it shows, and most of that treatment happens here. When an injury does need surgery, we say so plainly rather than sell you a round of something else first.

Who we end up talking to

A work injury creates a stack of letters and calls. It helps to know who we will and will not talk to. We send records to you, to your employer’s carrier when the claim is accepted, and to your attorney if you have one. We do not chat about your care with an adjuster off the record.

This matters because an off-the-record phone summary is not recorded and cannot be checked. It reliably shows up in a file as something a bit different from what was said. Everything goes in writing, and you can have a copy of all of it.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the clinic from Alton?

About thirty minutes via the Clark Bridge, US 367 and I-270 to 4477 Woodson Rd, Suite 202, beside Lambert Airport. It is the shortest Illinois drive we have.

My employer already sent me to their clinic. Have I lost my choice?

Not necessarily. Care obtained before you reported the injury does not count, and emergency care never counts. What counts is worth establishing before you make a second move.

The other driver’s insurer says the damage was minor.

Car damage and injury severity match up poorly. The argument gets used because it convinces people, not because it is sound: the disconnect explained.

Do you document for the claim as well as treat?

Both, and they do not pull against each other. Objective findings, recorded properly, are what make treatment hold up: objective evidence and the malingering label.

What should you tell a workers’ comp doctor?

Tell the doctor what happened, not only what hurts. A note reading back pain with no cause is close to useless six months later. Report the injury to your employer in writing. Get seen quickly. Make sure the record states how the injury happened. Exam findings, imaging read against those findings and a written baseline of what you can do are what make a claim readable later.
